Sierra College’s History Professor and Democratic Club Advisor Dan Defoe, not to be confused with the author of Robinson Crusoe, was a recent losing candidate in the Rocklin City Council election this year. Last Tuesday, he reintroduced himself at the Rocklin City Council meeting to seek funding for a new movie he is working on. I scrambled to see where his request was listed on the agenda. I couldn't find it anywhere. I then assumed that the request would be voted on in a future session so opponents could have time to respond. This would not be the case.

With his radio announcer voice, Professor Defoe laid out the details of a project to make a movie about the California Quarries featuring the Big Gun Quarry in Rocklin. Already being funded by the non-profit Rocklin Historical Society, Defoe was requesting an additional $5,000 from the City. (It is my understanding that he will be paid to produce the movie).

I then took the podium to voice my opposition to this unscheduled request. I told the professor that we shared a common passion in the study of history and that I enjoyed his taped shows on the Sierra College Channel. However, I thought that using taxpayer money to fund his movie project was inappropriate. Instead, he should go to individuals to request funding. I would be first in line to contribute.

Rocklin’s socialist “Republican” Council thought differently as they voted unanimously to fund his project, Republican Council Woman Kathy Lund expressed it best when she noted that the Council often funds such special projects. Since he lost the last election, you might wonder if the Council was appeasing the Democratic opposition by doing Defoe some kind of favor. To me, the funding is yet another example of Republican Socialism and big government spending in King John Doolittle’s Placer County. Simply speaking the truth, Placer County steals our money and then redistributes it to fund such obscure “Pork Barrel” type projects. Surely the answer lies in voting out these socialist Republican incumbents and in our attending Council Meetings to let these big spenders know that you’re watching them as they redistribute your wealth. Since Republicans have essentially become Democrats in Placer County, the only true conservative voice seems to rest with the Libertarians.
